H.M. Borges
H.M. Borges is one of the classic Madeira wine houses. Founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, a passionate merchant who dedicated his life to seeking out the island's best wines for aging, it continues today in the hands of the fourth generation of the family, who maintain the same spirit of patience and dedication.
The company has been located since 1924 in a century-old building in the center of Funchal, with approximately 1,600 m² filled with old casks, pipes, and barrels where batches aged 3, 5, 10, 15 years and rare vintages rest. Here, time is the main ingredient: many wines age using the traditional canteiro method, in which natural heat and oak wood build layers of color, aroma, and texture over the years.
H.M. Borges' portfolio covers virtually all Madeira styles: from 3- and 5-year-old blends ideal for everyday drinking to 10- and 15-year-old ranges in Malmsey, Boal, Verdelho, and Sercial, including Tinta Negra vintages and long-aged wines. Each bottle displays a very Madeiran balance between vibrant acidity, well-measured sweetness, and deep notes of dried fruit, caramel, spices, and tropical fruits.
Buying H.M. Borges means taking home the living history of Madeira: an independent producer, focused on quality, that exports to various markets but continues to age its wines as it always has – with time, silence, and respect for tradition. Whether for a fresh aperitif, to accompany desserts, or to open a special vintage with family, there's always an H.M. Borges perfect for the moment.
