Lord of the Monchique Mountains
Morgado da Serra de Monchique is a recent brand, but it was born with a distinctly Portuguese and Algarvean idea. The project was initiated in April 2023 by the Abegoaria Group, and the name was chosen to combine the historical nobility of the term "morgado" (a type of nobleman or entailed estate) with the natural strength of the Serra de Monchique mountain range, one of the great landmarks of the Algarve.
The vineyards associated with the brand are located on the grounds of the Morgado do Quintão Resort in Lagoa, and the line was designed to honor the region with different wine profiles. There are fresher and more straightforward wines, single-varietal wines, and also blends that showcase the versatility of the Algarve at the table.
Among the grape varieties used by the brand are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Antão Vaz, Viognier, Arinto, Verdelho, Aragonez, and Castelão. This allows for the creation of a collection ranging from citrusy and saline whites to more structured reds, without losing regional identity.
Behind the brand lies the vision of Abegoaria, a family project that presents itself as a defender of Portuguese identity, origins, and the gastronomic and wine diversity of the country. In Morgado da Serra de Monchique, this vision translates into accessible wines, with a carefully curated image and a distinctly Algarvean accent.
