Following the hot and dry year of 2017, the winter of 2018 was also not generous in terms of rainfall. From October 2017 until the end of February 2018, it practically did not rain. The first rains appeared at the end of February and continued in abundance until mid-June. Spring was humid with mild temperatures, which caused strong mold pressure on the vines between flowering and bunch closure. This unusual situation surprised most winegrowers in the Douro wine region. It was crucial to be prepared to act at the right time, and there was no room for error, to ensure excellent sanitary conditions in the vineyard. At the end of July came veraison and the beginning of grape ripening. August was hot and dry, but fortunately, the water reserves in the soil from the spring rains gave the vines the opportunity to work fully with an excellent vegetative wall. Varieties: late-ripening varieties that reached levels of excellence. In the 2018 harvest, we received the first white grapes from Quinta do Crasto on August 29th and finished the harvest on October 14th with the last grapes from the higher altitude vineyards. As a final result, in 2018 we have excellence in freshness and balance in white wines, red wines with excellent concentration, structure, freshness and aromatic definition, and Port wines with excellent aging potential.
Winemaking:
The grapes, sourced from the best Tinta Roriz plots at Quinta do Crasto, were transported in 22 kg crates and subjected to rigorous sorting upon arrival at the winery. After total destemming and light crushing, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation tanks. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, a gentle pressing was performed.
Aging:
Quinta do Crasto Tinta Roriz 2018 was aged in French oak barrels for 18 months.
Exam Grade:
Deep ruby in color, it displays excellent aromatic intensity, highlighting notes of subtle cocoa, rockrose, and fresh wild berries. It begins captivatingly on the palate, evolving into a wine of excellent volume, structure, and solidity, where tannins of excellent tension and quality are found. A wine full of personality that finishes fresh and with excellent persistence.
